About the Art,
and the Artist ...
Riki R. Nelson paints only jazz musicians and singers she has personally
encountered.
She works exclusively
from her own sketches, photos, "mental
pictures" and inspiration. The Artist's goal is as much to
paint the spirit of the performance and the performer, as a true
likeness.
She paints both emerging and legendary jazz artists.
It is Nelson's
belief, that for a portrait to be a true work of
art, it must come from the artist's sensitivity to the subject.
She feels that seeing and studying a performer in person, allows
her to in some way touch their, "essence" which she can
then translate into the "soul" of a painting. This is
why she goes to such great lengths to get her own sketches and photos,
drawing inspiration exclusively from her own encounters with the
musicians and singers she uses as subjects.
Other subjects
by this artist include nightclub, bar, and cabaret scenes - look
for a new collection in DEC 2007
Nelson is also known for her seasonal plein air waterscenes.

The
Art Museum of Los Gatos presents: Peter Hobbs Digrazia "Asleep in
America, Photographic Reflections" :
Exhibit:
August 9, 2007 October 13, 2007
Asleep in America
is Digrazia's response to the current cultural crisis. "My
greatest wish would be for viewers to step back and consider what
they may unconsciously be avoiding. It doesn't have to be war or
genocide or famine. It can be simple stuff like how your kid is
doing in school or filling up at the gas station."
This is Digrazia's
first solo show as an artist, after thirty years as a creative director
and photographer in the advertising world. He traces his influences
to serving as a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, the
writings of Herman Hesse, the films of David Lean, and the paintings
of Salvador Dali.
This project
chronicles the over-stimulation of our media driven culture and
the toll it takes on our awareness.
Comprised of 24 sepia-toned photographs, there is a deliberate soft
focus to all the pieces that illustrates the haze of unawareness.
Shot entirely with a Leica Deluxe 3 digital camera, the photographs
balance a profound solemnity with a quiet indignation.
