About the creation of "Girl in a Box, Girl in Cherry Silk":
Like all of the bar paintings I have done, this piece is based on an actual place and occurrence. It is from a photo shoot I did at "The 180" (now closed) a very upscale bar and restaurant that had a secret life after 11:00 at night..
Back in the studio I changed elements, and used still life set ups to create a sense of dimension and realism, but the bar is as it was, and the essence of the scene, is there. As an artist, I have my own vision, that is separate from the actual photo, the intangible elements that defy words, but can only be expressed - hopefully- with imagery.
After the upscale trendy "180" restaurant closed, two large panels in the wall of the lounge would pull aside, and there would be a girl in lingerie, inside a glass box.
I found the contrast between the upscale beautiful people atmosphere, and the seamy scene in the background an ironic and interesting metaphor.
I wanted this painting to be much more then the sum of it's parts, and to have a haunting quality.
In this painting I used classical painting techniques, this piece took months to complete.
